Discovery Guide

This guide gives basic details on searching the library collections using the Discovery tool

Advanced search

To use Advanced Search, click on the link to the right of the basic search box.

Advanced Search allows you to refine your search by specifying additional criteria, including:

  • Field selector - search across any field or a particular field (such as title, author, subject, ISSN/ISBN).
  • Search type - For each search line, this parameter indicates how your search terms are compared against the search field.
    • Contains - Returns results that contain all words in the phrase. The words may be in a different order or not close together. 
    • Is (exact) - Returns results that contain phrases that exactly match the phrases specified in the query.
    • Starts with – Returns results that contain words that start with the specified string. 
  • Boolean Operators – As with basic searches, you can include the AND, OR, and NOT operators between words and phrases in each search line.
  • Add a New Line – Advanced searches allow you to include a maximum of seven search criteria lines.
  • Filters – Filters allow you to narrow your results to a specific material type, language or date range.
