EndNote

This CSIRO specific guide has information on managing your references using EndNote.

Compress your Library

Save your Library (the .ENL file and associated .DATA folder) into a single compressed .enlx file to back it up.

Watch this video (1 min) or follow the steps below:

To compress your Library:

  1. Select File > Compress Library (.enlx).
Compress your EndNote library, back-up your EndNote library, File menu, select compress library (.enlx)
  2. Choose the following options:
  • Create your compressed EndNote library
  • Compress your library With File Attachments
  • Include All References in Library

Compress library menu options, create and email, compress with file attachments, compress without file attachments, compress with all references in library, compress with selected references, compress with all references in a group or group set

  1. Click Next. The file will have the same name as your original EndNote library and the new extension .enlx.
  2. Click Save.
  3. Back up your Library on a regular basis to help prevent the loss of any data.

Important: You can save your Compressed Library (.enlx file) to a cloud syncing folder, but you'll need to move it to your local drive i.e. Local Disc (C:) before you open and edit it.

It is highly recommended that you store your Compressed Library (back up) in a different location to your original Library.

Syncing your Library

Synchronise your EndNote 21 Library contents (references, groups and file attachments) with a free EndNote Online account.

Use any computer to access your references directly from a web browser using EndNote Online.

Watch this video (1 min 10 sec) or follow the steps below.

Set up EndNote Sync

  1. Open your EndNote Library.
  2. Select Library > Sync.
  3. Login to your EndNote Online account using your Web of Science login, or click on 'Sign up' to create a new account using your CSIRO email address and a unique password.
  4. Create a compressed copy of your Library to back it up.
  5. Once synchronised, EndNote will automatically sync newly-added information once every 15 minutes.

Important: Do not move or rename your EndNote Library files after they are synchronised as this breaks the link to the Sync target Library. Only sync and share one primary Library. Attempting to sync multiple Libraries will merge the references of both EndNote Libraries.
