EndNote

This CSIRO specific guide has information on managing your references using EndNote.

Groups

Groups are a subset of references that already exist in the Library.

  • By default, the Library has permanent groups and temporary groups.
  • You can create custom groups and smart groups to organise references into specific categories.
  • You can also create group sets to group together any of your custom groups or smart groups.

Additional information: Definitions and notes about groups.

Types of Groups

Permanent Groups cannot be removed or renamed. These include:

  • All References - displays every reference in the Library.
  • Unfiled - displays the references that are not part of a Custom Group (and, optionally, Smart Groups).
  • Trash -  is a holding place for references you have removed from the Library but have not yet deleted. Permanently delete references by emptying the Trash.

EndNote Desktop library, permanent groups, All references group, Recently added group, unfiled group, trash

Temporary Groups include:

  • Copied References - shows the last set of references retrieved in online search mode and copied to the Library.
  • Duplicate References - shows the most recent results using the 'Find Duplicates' function.
  • Imported References - shows the last set of references imported into the Library.
  • Online Search - shows the most recent search Library results.

EndNote Desktop library, temporary groups, Online search

  • Find Full Text shows the most recent results using the 'Find Full Text' function.

EndNote Desktop temporary groups, Find full text
These Groups may be replaced as you use commands in EndNote, and are always deleted when you close a Library. (Note that only the Groups are deleted; the references remain in the Library).

You can create a Custom Group for different topics, projects or authors.

Smart Groups allow you to build a search strategy so that references in your Library that meet the search criteria are automatically copied into the smart group. Any new references that meet the search criteria are also automatically added to a Smart Group.
