Open Athens

Frequently asked questions

Q. Will Open Athens remember me if I use a different browser or device?

OpenAthens uses cookies to remember your device’s IP address. If you change browsers, from Firefox to Chrome for example, you will be asked to sign in again. Additionally, you will be asked to sign in again if you change devices, for example, from a laptop to a mobile.

Q. I declined a Terms of Service or Privacy Policy, and now I am unable to access resources. What do I do?

When accessing a resource through OpenAthens for the first time, you may be presented with a publisher's Terms of Service or Privacy Policy statement. Please confirm that you have read and agree to the terms to be able to access the content.

If you decline the terms, you will have limited or no access to the subscribed content. To correct this problem and accept the publisher's terms and policies, you may need to clear your browser's cookies and cache and sign in again. You could also try to use a different browser.

Q. I have authenticated from the web but cannot access the resource. What do I do?

When attempting to authenticate, you may receive a notification advising you do not have access to the resource. This may look similar to the following:

Access denied: [database name].

Restrictive mode is currently enabled and [staff member] has not been granted access. Please review the account and ensure the resource is allocated to the correct permission sets.

The library may not subscribe to this particular resource, so you'll need to check Discovery to be sure we have access to it. In these situations where we do not subscribe, please submit a Document Delivery request.
