Many wonder what role CC licenses, and CC as an organization, can and should play in the future of generative AI. The legal and ethical uncertainty over using copyrighted inputs for training, the uncertainty over the legal status and best practices around works produced by generative AI, and the implications for this technology on the growth and sustainability of the open commons have led CC to examine these issues more closely. We want to address some common questions, while acknowledging that the answers may be complex or still unknown.

This report, prepared by the research staff of the Law Library of Congress, provides a list of jurisdictions in the world where legislation that specifically refers to artificial intelligence (AI) or systems utilizing AI have been adopted or proposed. Researchers of the Law Library surveyed all jurisdictions in their research portfolios to find such legislation, and those encountered have been compiled in the annexed list with citations and brief descriptions of the relevant legislation.

The publication offers concrete recommendations for policy-makers and education institutions on how the uses of GenAI tools can be designed to protect human agency and genuinely benefit students, teachers and researchers.

The new edition is focused on the rapid commercialization of generative AI (GenAI) posing multiple large-scale risks to individuals, society, and the planet which requires a rapid, internationally coordinated response to mitigate. It also presents conclusions concerning AI policy incoporting end-to-end governance approaches that address risks “by design” and regulate at all stages of the design-to-deployment life cycle of AI products, governance mechanisms for GenAI technologies addressing the entirety of their complex supply chains, and actors subject to controls that are proportionate to the scope and scale of the risks their products pose.

The rapid evolution of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies presents significant opportunities and challenges for higher education institutions. This report, prepared by researchers from Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University, investigates the current adoption and impact of GenAI tools among university staff across Australia. The study provides comprehensive baseline data on the prevalence, purposes, and effects of AI usage across staff groupings. These findings may help inform strategic, operational and investment decisions in the future.

The Australian National Robotics Strategy was developed in consultation with the robotics industry, researchers, state and territory governments and the Australian public. It was guided by an advisory committee of Australian robotics and technology experts.
